The city was founded in 1577 by Ram Das, the fourth guru of the Sikhs. Amritsar literally means 'Pool of Nectar', derives its name from the sacred pool, Amrit Sarovar that surrounds the fabulous Golden Temple. Golden Temple - The Golden Temple or Har Mandir Saheb is the holiest shrine for the people of Sikh religion. The temple was the main centre of the old Amritsar city, Built between 1588 and 1601, the temple architecture is a combination of Hindu and Muslim styles.
Jallianwala Bagh : The Jallianwala Bagh is situated close to the Golden Temple, Established by the Government of India in 1951. It is now turned into public garden that also houses a memorial to commemorate the massacre of peaceful celebrators by the British forces. Spread over 6.5 acres of land, Jalianwala Bagh is associated with of the saddest days in Indian History when thousands of innocent people were killed.
Wagah Border : Wagah Border, the final frontier is located about 47 kms from Amritsar. This is the only border crossing between India and neighbour country Pakistan. Every evening at sunset the parade takes place between the soldiers of India and Pakistan. It is a great moment to see the soldiers of both the countries in high enthusiasm and respect for each other.
Maharaja Ranjit Singh Museum : Summer palace turned into museum, Maharaja Ranjit Singh Museum is a lovely building which archives the Royal Heritage of Maharaja Ranjit Singh such as arms and armour, outstanding paintings and century old coins and manuscripts. The palace is surrounded by the famous Rambagh Gardens popular for its statue of the legendary king with his horse.
Partition Museum : The Partition Museum, to focus on the stories and trauma of the millions who had to suffer from the bloody consequences of a ruthless partition, was recently opened up at Town Hall in Amritsar. It is developed by the Arts and Cultural Heritage Trust (TAACHT). This museum is a part of the newly inaugurated Heritage Street at Amritsar, and street begins from the Golden Temple and ends at the Town Hall. You will see the newspaper clippings, photographs as a collection of this Museum. You will see the personal items that were donated by people who had witnessed and lived during the Partition.
